The waiting couple, their family and friends happily watched the flyby in Nichupte Lagoon off the coast of the resort around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the US Sun reported.
” It’s a girl! Guests are heard screaming as the single-engine Cessna 206, which was leased from a company called Xomex, flew over and performed a series of stunts, according to the outlet.
One person on the boat even made a scary joke, saying, “It’s okay as long as it doesn’t hit us in the end!”
Moments later, the prescient comment almost ended up happening as the plane plunged into the lagoon, turning what had been a joyous celebration into an abject nightmare.
“Surely that can’t happen!” shouted a shocked participant.
Local media reported that there were between two and four passengers on the plane, which took off from Holbox, about 40 miles from Cancun.
One of the people died while the rescue operation was underway, Francisco Fernández Millán, president of the Nautical Association of Quintana Roo, said in a statement, according to La Prensa Latina.
The other person died while receiving first aid from first responders, the outlet reported.
It was not immediately clear whether the victims included the pilots.
The Federal Civil Aviation Agency has opened an investigation into the tragedy.
