The Les Misérables actor took to Twitter to announce his father’s death on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a passenger on the Sydney domestic flight to Coffs Harbor, staff and a doctor on board attempted to resuscitate the 85-year-old.
“They basically gave him CPR for who knows how long … probably 18 to 20 minutes,” passenger Andrew Fraser told 7News .
“They worked tirelessly and continued after the flight landed.”
Mirror has reached out to representatives for comment.
Telling fans about his father’s death, Russell tweeted, “I walked into the bush last night. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has subsided, this date will forever be tinged with sadness.
“My dear old man, my father-in-law, the sweetest of men, has passed away.
“I’m posting this because I know there are people all over the world who have their hearts that he touched and whose ribs he tickled with his shining eyes and cheeky demeanor towards everyone and everything, and it is probably as effective a method as any to get the news out. ”
He continued: “John Alexander Crowe March 13, 1936 to March 30, 2021 Born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Died in Coffs Harbor, NSW, his home for 25 years. Rest in peace. ”
Russell was close to both parents and said in June last year he returned home in quarantine with John and his mother Jocelyn.

“My mom and dad are pretty old now,” he told Extra TV at the time.
“My dad is 84 and my mom is 79 and they suffer from the things people get at that age. You know, this and that early on.
“So it was better for me to be where they were.”
