Manchester United risked Real Madrid’s wrath after launching with an approach for Villarreal center-back Pau Torres, according to reports in Spain.

The imposing 24-year-old defender has a growing list of admirers after a string of excellent La Liga and Europa League results and is expected to be in his country’s starting XI for the upcoming European Championships this summer.

Real Madrid had even named Torres as a natural successor to skipper Sergio Ramos, who is on contract with Los Blancos at the end of the season and has yet to start talks about a renewal.

But United appear to have stolen a step from Real and have Torres at the top of their list of potential center-back targets, with the Spaniard keenly interested in a move to the Premier League.

According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, United’s rival approach to Torres stunned Real president Florentino Perez and left him “very angry”.

The La Liga giants – who are also sweating over Raphael Varane’s future – were increasingly confident of landing Torres but may now be forced to rethink.

The Villarreal star is seen as Ramos’ perfect long-term heir and has a relatively affordable € 60million (£ 51million) release clause.

United, meanwhile, have long been in the market for a new center-back and have in fact been linked with both Ramos, who could be available with a free transfer this summer, and Varane, who is contract-free in 2022. and could be sold for a reduced fee.

Young French Sevilla center-back Jules Kounde is another player on United’s radar, although the imposing Torres may be more Premier League ready.

The Villarreal star, currently ruled out with a minor muscle injury, has excelled under Unai Emery this season and helped his side advance to the Europa League quarter-finals and may even meet United in the final of the competition.

Along with a new center-back, United have also been heavily linked with a move by Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland – albeit facing stiff competition and expected to include gigantic transfer fees.
