He acknowledged the support he received from “TV wife” Susanna Reid and Dr Hilary, but made his opinion on Alex Beresford very clear when reporting on his latest show.
Piers accused Alex of “trying to make a name for himself” by attacking him live – which particularly hurt him after claiming he had “gone out of his way” to give career advice to the presenter.
Shocked viewers saw the couple locked in a furious on-air exchange on the fateful Tuesday after Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired which resulted in Piers being stormed.
The 55-year-old host has now revealed he had to leave to ‘calm down’ as he was afraid to say something he would come to bitterly regret when Alex ‘attacked’ him.
Describing Alex as “stuck”, Piers recalls the moment his colleague ambushed him with a “very personal attack”.
“I understand you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve said it so clearly many times about this program, ”Alex told him.
“I understand that you have a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or that you had one and she cut you off… she has the right to interrupt you if she wishes.
“Has she said anything about you since she interrupted you?” I don’t think she did, but yet you keep ransacking her. ”
Piers revealed: “As [Alex] delivered her censorship lecture, implying that my only motivation for not believing Ms Markle’s extravagant claims was because she had ‘ghosted’ me four years ago after we had been friendly for 18 months – I really didn’t care, but it was informative about her character, especially when I saw her do the same to a lot of other people, including her own dad – I felt the vapor rise in me .
“I don’t mind that outside guests trying to make a name for themselves by hitting me like that, but I wasn’t going to sit there and take it from one of my own team, especially someone. one that I have gone out of my way to help whenever he asks me for advice on his career.
“Realizing that I might say something that I would regret, I decided to leave the studio to calm down. ”
Piers said he was shocked to find that on leaving Alex continued to complain about him, accusing him of “pathetic and absolutely evil behavior.
When Piers finally returned to the set, Alex said he didn’t think he was racist, which the host said was as ridiculous as someone saying he wasn’t a female drummer.
The freshness between the two men did not end with the departure of Piers the same night of their spitting.
Piers reveals in his column that Alex was his only GMB colleague not to send him a message of support after he left.
Earlier this week, Alex told viewers “it was good to be back” as he hosted the show with Kate Garraway.
“You had some tumultuous times too Alex, it’s lovely to have you here, you really are,” Kate told him.
“It’s good to be back,” Alex insisted.
