Oakland teachers refuse to return to school, despite getting COVID vaccine as a priority


Teachers at public schools in Oakland, Calif., Chose not to return to class until the mandatory start date in mid-April, despite priority vaccinations and cash bonuses.

School officials were forced to cancel their scheduled reopening dates next week at six elementary schools and 10 preschools on Thursday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

After seven months of distance learning, some students were supposed to be able to return to teaching in person on Tuesday, as agreed by the district and the unions.

But due to a lack of teachers willing to return before April 14, students with high needs, including homeless students, students in host families and students with special needs, will not be able to not enter class in advance, the newspaper reported.

“Right now, we just don’t have enough staff who have opted for in-person instruction to open our classrooms to elementary and high school students on Tuesday,” a school official said. Cleveland Primary in a letter to parents. “While this is disappointing news, please know that we are working hard to ensure that we find all possible ways to serve our students safely. ”

Parents in Oakland, frustrated by the district and the union’s inability to force teachers to return Tuesday to teach in person, called the situation “laughable.”

Fox News could not immediately contact Oakland School Board principal Shanthi Gonzales for comment, but she called the lack of volunteer teachers “disappointing” on Friday.

“Parents are very frustrated and especially kids who have been through isolation, depression, all of those things,” she told The Chronicle. “It’s disappointing and I am very family friendly. I wish more teachers had volunteered. ”
