Nate Diaz vs. Leon Edwards to play five rounds at UFC 262

UFC 262 added a historic co-main event.
Nate Diaz and Leon Edwards are set to face off in the main co-event of the May 15 pay-per-view event in Houston. The welterweight fight will be the first fight in five rounds in UFC history that is not a title fight or a main event.

Two people familiar with the match confirmed the reservation to MMA Junkie but requested to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. ESPN was the first to break the news.

Diaz (20-12 MMA, 18-11 UFC) has not competed or been booked since a loss in November 2019 for the “BMF” title to Jorge Masvidal. One of the most popular fighters in UFC history, Diaz has remained active on Twitter during his time away from the cage, occasionally taking shots at potential future opponents.

Shortly after announcing his return, Diaz returned to Twitter. He confirmed his participation in UFC 262 and tried a chance against headliners Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira, who will compete for the vacant UFC lightweight championship.

« Come see me on May 15th, I’ll be headlining # ufc262 in Houston, Texas, I’ll also have the new UFC lightweight title fight on the card, I need people to know that these guys worked really hard and I can’t wait to see who will have my old one I’ll see (you) guys there.

In his last five fights, Diaz is 3-2 with wins over Conor McGregor, Anthony Pettis and Michael Johnson – and losses to McGregor and Masvidal.

Having not lost since 2015, Edwards (18-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) had an eight-game winning streak in his main March 13 clash against Belal Muhammad. The fight ended in the second round after Edwards punched Muhammad in the eye and rendered him unable to continue.

In mid-February, the two fighters engaged in a brief exchange on Twitter as Edwards waited for an opponent to intervene for Khamzat Chimaev. After Edwards called him, Diaz picked up a page from Conor McGregor’s book.

UFC 262 takes place on May 15 at the Toyota Center in Houston. The main card airs on ESPN + pay-per-view after preliminaries on ESPN / ESPN +.
