Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards booked for UFC 262 in untitled five-round co-main event

Nate Diaz makes his long-awaited return to action at UFC 262 when he faces Leon Edwards in an untitled five-round co-main event in Houston on May 15.

Several sources confirmed the match against MMA Fighting on Tuesday following an initial report from ESPN.

This is expected to be the first time an untitled fight has been scheduled for five rounds outside of a main event. Usually the only untitled fights to win five rounds are the main events, but Diaz vs Edwards will co-title UFC 262 alongside the vacant lightweight title showdown between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira.

For Diaz, this is a chance to return to the top of the welterweight division after suffering a loss to Jorge Masvidal in his last outing at UFC 244 in November 2019 when medics refused to allow him to continue due to of cuts after the third round of their fight for the title “BMF”.

In his last five outings, Diaz has gone 3-2 with notable wins over Conor McGregor and Anthony Pettis at the welterweight.

Diaz also confirmed the fight via Twitter following the initial report.

Meanwhile, Edwards is looking for a high profile victory to add to his resume after being forced to quit playing for more than a year thanks in large part to the coronavirus pandemic and then his own personal battle with COVID-19 . He was faced with the much-vaunted hope Khamzat Chimaev on three occasions, but the fight was eventually dropped due to Chimaev’s COVID-19 issues.

Edwards ended up facing Belal Muhammad as a late substitute in March, but an inadvertent glance at Muhammad in the second round forced the bout to stop. The bout was then judged without competition.

Now Edwards is moving on from that game while looking to build on an eight-game winning streak (excluding the no-contest) with the hope that a win over Diaz will earn him a title shot.

The UFC has also re-edited a video of Diaz’s return, which was originally posted ahead of his fight with Pettis at UFC 241 in August 2019.
