The Ukrainian boss backed the Paris-Saint-Germain forward to become Europe’s best player after seeing him up close in World Cup qualifying.

Mbappe has enjoyed a rapid rise to the highest level since his breakthrough in Monaco in 2016, enjoying success at club and international level.

Ukrainian boss Shevchenko, who saw the Paris Saint-Germain star go blank against his side in World Cup qualifiers last week, believes he is capable of winning football’s most prestigious individual award. ‘it continues on its current trajectory.

Shevchenko said at a Mbappe talents press conference, three days after Ukraine’s 1-1 draw with France: “We know how fantastic he is. He has an exceptional future. He is a boy who must win many Ballons d’Or, because he deserves it.

Mbappe’s record for France

Mbappe’s ineffective display against Ukraine was an anomaly for the 22-year-old, who has been one of the most consistent players in Didier Deschamps’ side since his debut for France in 2017.

The PSG talisman has scored 16 goals in 40 games for the Blues to date, including four in their race to glory at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

How has Mbappe played for PSG this season?

Mbappe has found the net 30 times in 36 appearances in all competitions for PSG in 2020-21, one more than he managed during all of last season.

The former Monaco starlet has scored 20 goals in Ligue 1 and six in the Champions League, Mauricio Pochettino’s team still looking for both competitions before the end of the campaign.

Mbappe will be back in action for his country when they face Kazakhstan in their second Group D game on Sunday. He will also be in the running to play against Bosnia and Herzegovina three days later, before returning to PSG ahead of a huge Ligue 1 clash against Lille.
