Marcus Mariota is happy to be able to continue with the Las Vegas Raiders despite a pay cut to stay with the team.
Via KHON2’s Rob DeMello, Mariota said the chance to stay with the Raiders overcame any concerns about his salary cut for the coming season.
“I think in the end. I focus on controlling what I can control, ”said Mariota. “It’s the product on the ground. Every day I wake up, train and get ready to go. Ultimately, we are very lucky to play this game for a living. A lot of us really make a lot of money. For me, I love playing the game. The excitement, the opportunity to be a Raider, overcame it all. Being here in Vegas, being part of this organization meant a lot more to me. I am delighted to be able to return. ”
Mariota agreed to a deal that cut her salary from $ 10.725 million to just $ 3.5 million for this season. It includes incentives for him to earn up to $ 8 million if he is given the chance to play and meet his performance goals. It’s a pretty big part that he chose to forgo to make sure he stays with the Raiders.
“I think in the end the adversities, the challenges you face, will eventually develop who you are. I’m just excited to hopefully get over this bump. I feel like I’m in good health. I have the opportunity to have a little bit of stability, something that has been a little elusive in my career. I’m just excited to be in a place where I’m comfortable. I’m confident. I’m just going to do whatever I can to help this team win, ”said Mariota.
