The England winger was chased by the Red Devils all summer of last year only to be told by Borussia Dortmund that a deal was done.
This left them empty-handed, although they signed teenage pair Facundo Pellestri and Amad instead.
However, there were a number of players on Old Trafford’s shortlist, one of which in particular was close to joining.
Watford star Ismaila Sarr had just been relegated to the Hornets but was an outstanding performer at Vicarage Road.
One of his glittering displays that caught the eye was a memorable game against Liverpool in the Premier League.

United were interested in his services over the summer and former Watford manager Filippo Giraldi has claimed a move is about to materialize.
He said on the Here We Go podcast: “We were extremely close, I personally negotiated with them.
“We couldn’t come to an agreement. And I think Ismaila is very young, it will happen for sure.
“He probably missed an opportunity, but I also think for his football to stay here and get 10 goals and 10 assists, he decides the league.
“I think for Watford as they are now, it’s lucky he stayed.”

United legend Neville has advocated Sarr’s signing to Old Trafford in the past and was particularly blown away by his performance against West Ham last season.
“Manchester United need a right winger. He’s a really big talent, honestly he really is, ”Neville told Sky Sports’ Gary Neville podcast.
“We’ve seen his performances before but tonight he was a shining light, even in that first half there were times when Watford attacked and that was through him.
“So yes, he will be wanted and Watford, I’m sure, will cash if he gets the right offer.” ”
