Hearts suffer shock loss to Brora Rangers in Scottish Cup

Brora Rangers hadn’t played a game since early January

The Brora Rangers created one of the biggest shocks in Scottish Cup history when the Highland League champions knocked out Hearts in the second round.

Christophe Berra seems to have saved the blushes of the championship leaders by canceling Jordan MacRae’s opening game 20 minutes from time.

But Martin MacLean responded five minutes later to book a home draw against Ligue 2’s Stranraer in the third round.

Hearts had been beaten finalists against Celtic two consecutive seasons.

This time, they lost to a part-time team whose championship season has been on hold since January due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Brora manager Steven Mackay told BBC Scotland: “In a normal season that would be an astronomical result, but you throw in the circumstances that surrounded this game.

“We haven’t played a game since the first week of January, we’ve had five practices and one friendly and that’s it. We had no right to win this game. I am so privileged to be the manager of such a match. an incredible team. ”

Hearts leads Scotland by 16 points and entered the game unbeaten in nine games as Brora has only managed three league games all season.

However, Mackay said that Brora “had an idea that we could do something special tonight”.

“It will be a surprise to most people, but internally to ourselves, not really,” he said. “I said in the locker room that I had a funny feeling that we could do something and it’s just an amazing feeling. This is the biggest moment of my football career as a player and coach and I am so proud of the players and the performance. . ”

Mackay praised his players for the way they responded to Hearts’ equalizer.

“Jordan Macrae scored the goal for us and he just pulled confidence across the team,” he said. “They have a knack for producing when the odds are against them.

“These players just have an amazing character and I wasn’t surprised that we came up the park and scored again. “

Midfielder MacLean remembered his winning goal a lot.

“But what an incredible feeling,” he said. “It hasn’t sunk and I don’t think it will for a few days. I’ll probably be sitting there thinking about it all day at work tomorrow to be honest. “

Fellow scorer MacRae pointed out that if they hadn’t won it could have been Brora’s last game of the season, with the Highland League threatening to be called off this season.

“I would want us against anyone because we gave Hibs a good game in the Coupe de la Ligue, but in the circumstances where we don’t train a lot, that was going to be a tough question and to be honest , I don’t know how we did it, ”said the forward.

Amazing, phenomenal and well deserved – analysis

Former Hearts midfielder Don Cowie

Well deserved for Brora for the effort, the form of the squad, the intent of the squad all night was incredible for a part-time squad that didn’t play much football.

Hearts will obviously be disappointed that despite all the possession they had, the lack of opportunities they created for themselves. I can only think of a couple of stops Joe Mallan must have made.

The way Brora responded when he went 1-1 was phenomenal. They were just fearless. After they picked up, you’d expect an attack from Hearts, but it just never materialized.
