France takes action to end anti-Asian discrimination

France plans to take action to stop the rise in racial discrimination against ethnic Asians amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The French government said in a statement Wednesday that there has been an unprecedented increase in discrimination against people of Asian descent since the start of the pandemic.
The government said it would develop preventative measures and listen to people’s opinions in April.
A group of ethnic Chinese in Paris said posts calling for attacks on Chinese started appearing on social media around October last year, when the second lockdown went into effect.
The group said it received complaints of discriminatory language and assault every day for the next three weeks, and it continues to receive several similar reports every week.
The group said some people have been invited to return to China and the virus has spread because of them. He said ethnic Asians, and not just people of Chinese descent, have also suffered discrimination.
An official for the group said the announcement showed the government knew what was happening to ethnic Asians. The official said the measures may not be enough, but the government is trying to do something.
