France names 27 swimmers for 2021 European Swimming Championships

Among the biggest names who will run for France on the men’s side is the two-time Olympic medalist. Florent Manaudou, Olympic medalist 2016 Marc-Antoine Olivier, Bronze medalist at the 2019 Worlds David Aubry, and 2017 world medalist Mehdy Matella.

As for women, Béryl Gastaldello will lead the team in one of their first major international competitions since making waves throughout the 2019 and 2020 ISL seasons. It will be their shot to maintain their dominance in the long distance arena. Gastaldello has a number of European Short Course Championship medals to his name, but has yet to make an individual podium in the long race version of the competition. In 2018, she helped France win gold in the women’s and mixed 4 × 100 freestyle relays at the European Long Course Championships in Glasgow.

Joining Gastaldello will be the 2012 and 2016 Olympian Charlotte Bonnet and Olympian 2016 Fantine Lesaffre. They were the only two French women to win an individual swimming medal at the last European Championships in long course in 2018. So far, 7 swimmers have qualified to run for France at the 2020 Olympic Games including Florent Manaudou (50 free), David Aubry (800 free / 10KM free water), Yohann Ndoye Brouard (100 backstroke / 200 backstroke), Marc-Antoine Olivier (10kM open water), Lara Grangeon (10KM eau libre), Mélaie Henique (50 libre), et Marie Wattel (100 freestyle / 100 butterfly). All these 7 swimmers with the exception of Lara Grangeon will be present at the 2021 European Championships.

Along with the individual performance of each athlete, one of the main scenarios for France will be the Olympic relay qualification. To date, France have only qualified the men’s 4 × 100 freestyle to swim in Tokyo and have until May 31, 2021 to post a fairly quick time to qualify.

The 2021 European Swimming Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary from May 10-23, with the pool swimming portion taking place during the second week of competition from May 17-23. both years and were originally scheduled for 2020, they have been postponed to this year. As every second edition takes place during an Olympic year, these versions are usually not stacked like those that take place outside of the year.

In a year as unconventional as 2021 in terms of rescheduled swimming competitions, France announced a fairly high-end roster with most of its current top swimmers.
