Alex Trebek’s son Matthew Trebek talks about the precious possession he kept to remember the late “Jeopardy!” »Host.
Matthew, 31, has revealed the only item of clothing his father left him before the quiz host died in November following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.
“I kept a tie that my mother gave to my father. As far as the clothes were concerned, that was probably the most important element, ”Matthew told Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday. “Almost everything, from” Jeopardy! “Went to The Doe Fund, and now we just have her home closet here. [sorting] through those [items], but for the moment, these are sort of sticking around. ”
Matthew went on to say that his late father was “completely different from what he was on television”.

“I grew up watching him on TV and seeing him dressed,” he says. “It was a way I obviously saw him. And then, being with him in the house, he was very relaxed, very dressed. ”
“He did a lot of work around the house, so most of his [clothes], it would be jeans and a t-shirt. A lot of jeans and T-shirts had holes in them. Completely different from what it was on TV, ”said Matthew.
In the midst of his father’s death less than six months ago, Matthew donated “Jeopardy!” From his late father! suits the nonprofit and said the idea to do so came from one of the show’s producers.
“Rocky Schmidt, who was one of the producers of” Jeopardy! “And one of my dad’s best friends asked, ‘Where should we give them? “” Matthew remembers. “I knew The Doe Fund [from] working in Harlem in a restaurant. They have another location which is not too far away. I think the work they do, and the people who work for The Doe Fund, are really great and amazing people. So it all made sense. ”

Last month, Trebek’s widow and Matthew’s mother, Jean Trebek, also praised Matthew for his efforts in an Instagram post.
“I sincerely appreciate my son, Matthew, and his good idea to donate his father’s costumes to @thedoefund,” she wrote. “I had never heard of this amazing organization until Matt brought it to me… it really is so wonderful. It warms my heart to know that Alex’s costumes will be donated to such an important cause.

The post also featured a black and white image of the late Trebek facing a mirror as he adjusts a dark colored tie.
For his part, the late host “Jeopardy” had also given graciously until his death. Last year, Trebek donated $ 100,000 to help ease the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.

“Homelessness is a serious problem,” Trebek told Fox News in a statement regarding the donation to the nonprofit, Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, at the time.
“I wanted to do something, so I researched this charity, visited their facility and personally saw the good work they do and wanted to help. I hope the others will do what they can as well, ”he said.
