CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Browns continue to strengthen their defense in the second wave of free agency.
On Friday night, they agree to the terms of a one-year contract with former Eagles defensive tackle Malik Jackson, 31, a league source confirmed. Jackson (6-5, 290) was released this week by the Eagles to free up space. He had 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks last season.
A 10-year-old pro, Jackson made the Pro Bowl in 2017 when he was with the Jaguars. He was originally a Broncos’ fifth-round pick in 2012 out of USC.
Jackson is the inside lineman putting pressure on the QB. Jackson’s pass-rush productivity was tied for 22nd in 128 qualifying defensive tackles, according to Pro Football Focus.
He recorded 267 tackles, 35 sacks, six forced fumbles and 25 pass deflections. Jackson played for the Broncos from 2012-15, Jaguars from 2016-18 and Eagles from 2019-20.
After being released by the Jaguars in 2019, Jackson signed a three-year, $ 30 million contract with the Eagles. But in the 2019 opener against Washington, he suffered a foot injury from Lisfranc and was placed on the injured reserve for the season.
Last season, Jackson played 15 games, registering 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two breakouts.
During that free agency period, the Browns also signed safety John Johnson III, defensive end Takk McKinley, cornerback Troy Hill and center linebacker Anthony Walker. They also re-signed linebacker Malcolm Smith.
Jackson is joining a tackle rotation that includes Sheldon Richardson and Andrew Billings, who opted out last season due to COVID-19. Billings suffers from asthma and was worried about contracting the infection. Former Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi has signed a one-year contract with the Bengals.
