Britney Spears’ long and complicated tutelage saga – the legal arrangement that has dominated and controlled the music superstar’s life and finances for more than a decade – has reached another, not entirely surprising, milestone this week. Variety reports that a lawyer for Spears moved to finally demand that his father, Jamie Spears, be permanently removed from his position as his staff restaurateur, a position he has been detained (except at least one leave due to medical absences) for the majority of the last 13 years.
This position gave the incredible former Spears control over her daughter’s life, including medical decisions, the appointment of bodyguards, and the ability to decide which visitors she is allowed to receive. Her daughter’s lawyer has now requested that this exclusive power now be transferred to Jodi Montgomery, who has been appointed in charge of temporary care for Britney after Jamie Spears was incapacitated due to the aforementioned medical absence in 2019.
It should be noted that Spears is not currently in danger of being removed from his co-guardianship of his daughter’s estate (i.e., her vast fortune and business concerns). which he co-manages with Bessemer Trust Company. (Even if statements from the Spears legal team earlier this year suggest that she is also not happy with the arrangement.)
The issues surrounding Spears’ guardianship have been going on for years, but were recently brought to light by the Coaching Britney Spears docuseries. The next hearing to determine the fate of the musician’s legal status is expected to take place in April.
