British Columbia registers 908 new COVID-19 cases, second highest to date


The spring outbreak of COVID-19 in British Columbia accelerated on Friday, with the province reporting 908 new cases and three more deaths.
It was the second-highest daily total of new cases the province has ever recorded, after a peak of 911 cases on November 27.

It also pushed the seven-day moving average for new cases to 699, the highest since December 7, when British Columbia was deep in the second wave of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 294 were in the Vancouver Coast Health Region, 438 in the Fraser Health Region, 55 in the Island Health Region, 43 in the Inland Health Region and 78 in the Northern Health Region.

Active cases also rose to 6,245, the highest recorded since January 7. An additional 9,996 people became self-isolating due to the exposure.

There have been 140 new confirmed cases of worrying variants of COVID-19, for a total of 1,912 recorded to date. Of these cases, 258 remained active.

The province said on Friday it was slightly increasing the immunization schedule for the elderly, with phone lines now open to anyone over 75.

Between Thursday and Friday, British Columbia administered more than 27,000 doses of the vaccine, leaving 550,062 people – about 10.7% of British Columbia’s population – with at least one dose of protection. Of these people, 87,223 also received a second dose.

There were 294 people in the hospital, down from 12 overnight. Eighty-one of them were in critical or intensive care.

Fraser Health also declared a new outbreak at Abbotsford Hospital in a single medical unit. Health officials declared an epidemic at Chilliwack General Hospital on Thursday.

British Columbia has recorded a total of 95,677 cases, while 1,449 people have died.
