With goals against Southampton and Wolves at the end of the year, club record signing Nicolas Pepe was arguably enjoying his best form since arriving from Lille for £ 72million in the summer of 2019.
And some fans believe the reason behind Pepe’s recent form was that he wore a bandage on his right hand – just like Karim Benzema, Luiz Suarez and even Jamie Vardy.
Of course, Arsenal fans are all too familiar with previous ties to the stars of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid respectively.
In the summer of 2013 there was the infamous £ 40million and one pound offer for the then Liverpool striker as the Gunners believed they had activated his release clause which meant they could discuss personal conditions with the Uruguayan.
However, this was not the case as Suarez ended up staying in Merseyside, scored 31 Premier League goals the following season and left for Barcelona the following summer.
Fast forward to the summer 2015 transfer window where Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Benzema from Real Madrid. Although the Frenchman does not appear to have taken these rumors seriously.
” Never. Like every summer, I laugh with my brother and my friends. We are waiting for the media to come out with these rumors, ”Benzema told the Journal du Dimanche. “In my opinion, I think Real and Barca are the pinnacle of football. Why would I go?
“I’m up for the best club in the world. I’m happy, it’s that easy. ”
After missing the real thing, some Arsenal fans theorized that Mikel Arteta might have discovered his own version of Benzema and Suarez.
Not in terms of playstyle, but a subtle change in Pepe’s appearance.
According to this theory, Arteta might have discovered another Benzema and Suarez after his side’s spectacular 3-3 draw against West Ham United this weekend.
Alexandre Lacazette was impressive at the London stadium. Aside from his deflected effort – which became a home goal from Tomas Soucek – to start the comeback and his header to earn a point at the Gunners, he created plenty of chances and was a constant threat to the Hammers’ defense.

And after noticing that the Frenchman was also wearing a bandage on his left hand, Reddit fans once again saw this as the reason for his performance.
