Wilfried Zaha asks Arsenal about ‘obvious’ Nicolas Pepe transfer decision

Wilfried Zaha says he was desperate to join Arsenal in the summer of 2019 and wonders why the Gunners opted for Nicolas Pepe instead of making the ‘obvious’ decision to sign him.
The Crystal Palace star believes clubs should prioritize signing players that they already know a lot about when playing against them, with Zaha having often impressed against the Gunners over the years.

The Ivorian striker had a chat with then Arsenal boss Unai Emery ahead of the 2019/20 season, and he believed he was close to signing for his childhood club.

“I had a conversation with the manager, actually,” Zaha told Jamie Carragher on The Greatest Games podcast.

“He was just like, ‘we don’t have to go through much.’ He saw me play, he knows I can switch games anytime and stuff like that. It was like, ‘yeah, we would like to have you’.

“And I was just like ‘I would love to come.’

“The conversation was pretty straightforward because I played against him when he led Arsenal, he saw what I can do, he saw my pace of work, which I can add to the squad.

“Obviously it was up to the club to decide who they chose, and obviously they chose Pepe over me. ”

Zaha says Premier League clubs who know all about the players they face should look to recruit those players instead of betting on foreign stars who might not settle in the division.

The Gunners opted to sign Nicolas Pepe instead

“I just think if there is a player who plays in the Premier League that you see week after week, and you know what he is doing … I feel like it’s a no-brainer,” he said. -he declares.

“The other leagues, I feel like they are totally different, in the Prem there are no easy games at all. Each team will give you a run for your money. There’s no game you’re going to go to, ‘yes we’re going to win 5-0’.

” That’s what I think. I totally understand what you mean. I feel like when the players come from overseas, I don’t know, they just have that advantage with the clubs, it’s like [they say], ‘yeah, maybe I want some more of him because he’s from there.’ ”
