#While all of #Yorkshire and the #Humber are currently at level 3, it might not stay that way for long.
The region may be ready to join the nearly 80% of the rest of the country already covered by #Level 4 following the exam on #Wednesday, #December 30.

#Level 4 means staying at home except for very limited reasons, sees the closure of non-essential stores, gyms, hair and beauty salons, pubs, restaurants and cafes to close.

#It also means that people are only allowed one-on-one outdoor meeting with people who are not part of their household or bubble.

#As cases continue to rise rapidly across the UK, more places are likely to be placed in the more stringent tier.

#Prime #Minister #Boris #Johnson introduced the more stringent level after a surge in cases – largely due to a new variant of #Covid-19, which can spread up to 70% faster than the original strain, #Hull #Live reports.

The cases have been concentrated in #London, in the south-east and in the east of #England, but are now spreading across the country.

A report released on #December 24 suggested that 21% of all new cases confirmed in #Yorkshire and the #Humber between #December 14 and #December 18 were of the new variant.

#Previous indications had been that the new strain was responsible for around 5 percent of infections in the area, suggesting it is spreading further.

#When is the next level exam?

The government has said it will review levels at least every two weeks, but has not ruled out changing levels more frequently.

#If they stick to a fortnight, that means the next level review will take place on #January 13 or before #January 13.

#Revising levels doesn’t mean things will change – #Hull and the #East #Riding have been held at level 3 since early #December despite falling infection rates.

#On #Thursday, it was speculated that a number of level 3 areas – including #York, where the number of cases has increased significantly – will soon be moved to level 4.

#Will there be a third national lockdown?

The government could also put the whole country on lockdown.

There has been speculation that all of #England could face level 4 restrictions and a level 5 lockdown has also been rumored.

#In many #Tier 4 areas, primary and secondary schools will switch to distance learning until at least #January 18.

#Speaking at a press conference on #Wednesday, hours after the latest levels were announced, #Boris #Johnson said the government had considered imposing an immediate national lockdown.

#He said: “I won’t hide it from you – this was obviously an option that we considered intensively, but overall we thought about it given the uncertainties we still face, the impact of level 4… we thought it was fair to continue with the prioritization, especially since you still have a pretty regional differentiation in the way people live. ”

#However, he hinted that a lockdown was not completely out of place, adding that the measures were still under review.
