#Happy #New #Year – although, “alas” (as the #Prime #Minister would say) it is only a polite wish and not a precise description.
#On the positive side, this morning, an 82-year-old dialysis patient from #Oxford became the first person in the world to receive the #Oxford #University / #AstraZeneca vaccine outside of clinical trials on the day it rolls out to the UK start. There is a full story here.

#But on the negative side, #Covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths are now on the rise and the outlook for the next few weeks is very bleak. #Here are three recent #Twitter threads that explain why.

#Things are going from very bad to much worse.

1/3 #Today’s data on NHS hospital beds occupied by confirmed COVID-19 patients continues to be of real concern and shows how difficult it is now for the NHS. #Two things to note. 1. #Very large increases overnight for #London, SE and E (+ 8%, + 6% and 5% in ONE single day) pic.twitter.com/FtnBB476S2

The current wave of the coronavirus crisis is in many ways * worse * than the original spring surge. #Fast wire:

#In his latest tweet, O ‘# #Brien says that “something big” is needed.

#It seems difficult to escape the conclusion that:

> in addition to going as fast as possible with mass vaccination, we need to do something big to slow the explosive growth and prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed again.

#Boris #Johnson hinted yesterday that tougher lockdown measures could be announced soon. #Matt #Hancock, the #Secretary of #Health, gave interviews this morning, and he also supported this message. “#Every week we look at all regions of the country to check that we are in the right position in terms of levels,” he said. “#It’s a very difficult situation in terms of the growth of the virus.”

The situation in the UK has become much worse in recent weeks due to the new variant of the coronavirus in circulation which is now dominant in some areas. #But in an interview on the #Today show, #Hancock said he was “incredibly worried” about another new variant of the virus, the one that has emerged in #South #Africa. #He told the program:

I am extremely worried about the #South #African variant. #That is why we have taken the steps we have taken to restrict all flights from #South #Africa and movement from #South #Africa, and to insist that anyone who has been to #South #Africa s ‘isolated.
#It is a very, very important problem. I actually spoke to my #South #African counterpart over #Christmas, and one of the reasons they know they have a problem is that, like us, they have excellent genomic science, to be able to study them. virus details. . #And that’s even more of a problem than the new UK variant.

ITV #Robert #Peston posted this on #Twitter to help explain #Hancock’s comment.

#According to one of the government’s scientific advisers, the reason @MattHancockThe “incredible concern” with the #South #African variant of #Covid-19 is that they are not as convinced that the vaccines will be as effective against it as they are for the UK variant. https://t.co/prc2udPVVP

#Today’s news is likely to be dominated by lingering uncertainty about whether students will return to school in #England. #And in #Scotland, the #Prime #Minister makes a declaration of emergency in parliament. #Here is the agenda for the day.

12h: #Downing #Street is expected to hold its daily lobby briefing.

12h15: #Vaughan #Gething, the #Welsh government health minister, holds a coronavirus briefing.

14h: #Scottish #Prime #Minister #Nicola #Sturgeon makes an emergency declaration in the #Scottish #Parliament, which has been recalled from the break, over the coronavirus.

#Politics #Live is now turning into a live blog on the UK coronavirus and, given how the #Covid crisis overshadows everything, this will continue for the foreseeable future. #But we’ll cover non-Covid political stories as well, and when they seem bigger or more interesting, they will take precedence.

#Here is our live blog on the global coronavirus.

I try to monitor the comments below the line (BTL) but it is impossible to read them all. #If you have a straightforward question, include “##Andrew” somewhere and I’m more likely to find it. I try to answer the questions, and if they are of general interest, I will post the question and answer above the line (ATL), although I can’t promise to do it for everyone.

#If you want to get my attention quickly, it’s probably best to use #Twitter. I’m on it @AndrewSparrow.
