#Syria on #Saturday criticized the US government for the sanctions it imposed on #Damascus, following a statement by the UN special rapporteur who called on #Washington to lift unilateral sanctions against the war-torn country.
The #Syrian #Foreign #Ministry has described US sanctions against the country as “crimes against humanity” that impact the lives of normal citizens as the country seeks to rebuild itself after 10 years of civil war.

The #United #States has imposed sanctions for years on #Syrian #President #Bashar #Assad and a number of his senior officials. The measures that took effect in #June will also allow US authorities to target foreign companies that do business with certain #Syrian public institutions.

#On #Tuesday, UN human rights expert #Alena #Douhan called on the #United #States to lift its unilateral sanctions “which could prevent the reconstruction of #Syria’s civilian infrastructure” destroyed by the conflict that killed about half a million people.

#Douhan, who is the #United #Nations special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on human rights, said that the US sanctions “violate the human rights of the #Syrian people.”

#Speaking on #Wednesday, US #Special #Envoy for #Syria #Joel #Rayburn dismissed #Douhan’s statement as “wrong and false.”

#Government-controlled areas in #Syria are suffering from a severe shortage of bread and fuel that #Damascus attributes to #Washington. #In some areas, people have to queue for hours outside bakeries to get bread, the country’s main staple.

#In addition to being hit hard by the sanctions, the #Syrian economy has suffered for many years due to widespread corruption and recently due to a severe economic and financial crisis in neighboring #Lebanon.
