“This is the most important moment in the history of social media,” Cohen tweeted Friday night. “The world’s biggest platforms have banned the world’s biggest provider of lies, conspiracies and hate. To all the Facebook and Twitter employees, users and supporters who fought for this – the whole world thank you!
The social media platform announced Friday that it would ban Trump for his role in inciting the violent demonstrations on Capitol Hill that took place earlier this week in response to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
Cohen has been a vocal critic of social media tech companies in the past for their role in spreading disinformation online. By accepting the ADL International Leadership Award in 2019, the Borat the actor used his platform to solve the problem:
All of this hatred and violence is facilitated by a handful of internet companies that make up the greatest propaganda machine in history. Think about it. Facebook, YouTube and Google, Twitter and others – they reach billions of people. The algorithms these platforms depend on purposely amplify the kind of content that keeps users engaged – stories that appeal to our lowest instincts and that trigger outrage and fear.
