Rio Ferdinand declined to question whether Manchester United could win the Premier League title this season while acknowledging that he had previously ‘jumped the gun’ with his ‘Ole’s at the wheel’ speech.
Ferdinand has been widely criticized after going lyrical about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a long tirade after United defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in March 2019 at the start of Norway’s reign.
Almost two years now, Ferdinand has praised United in the BT Sport by beating Watford to qualify for the fourth round of the FA Cup. Next week, United will have the opportunity to emerge at the top of the Premier League table.
Rio Ferdinand admitted he had become ‘a meme’ after his infamous ‘Ole’e at the wheel’ tirade after Man United beat PSG in 2019, and now remains coy about his former club’s title chances.
Aware of the criticism he received after United experienced a huge drop in form following his exciting speech in which he insisted Solskjaer write his own contract, Ferdinand is now proceeding with caution.
The United icon said: ‘[It’s a] huge week they win against Burnley and gain the upper hand and put pressure on Liverpool.
“As fast as you can get there you can fall, Spurs and Chelsea were up there and fell and people say that’s the end of the managers in charge there… Ole has enough experience not to not get too carried away. It’s living life in the big clubs.
Ferdinand takes great pleasure in seeing United do well, but admits it’s easy to fall
Ferdinand showed a strong awareness of the effect his words had had before, admitting with a smile that he had become something of an internet ‘meme’ after his post-PSG ecstasy went viral online.
Ferdinand added: “The highs are high and the lows are lower than the belly of a serpent. I don’t want to jump the gun like I did before.
“I don’t want to be a meme again, but as a football fan it’s part of getting emotional, getting excited and getting excited about things.
“United sitting rather at the top, after the game against Burnley, we hope I’ll be 100% excited.
“But then it’s a huge game after that against Liverpool to say that we’re not just flyovers, we’re here to stay. “
United beat Watford on Saturday to advance in the FA Cup and can break into the top of the Premier League table by midweek if they beat Burnley
Things seem to have fallen into place for Solskjaer and United as their strong form continues
During his famous BT Sport speech, a very excitable Ferdinand said in 2019: “Take out the contract, put it on the table, let him sign and let him put the numbers he wants to put there considering of what he’s been up to since entering. .
“Ole is driving, he’s doing his thing, United are back!
Following Ferdinand’s words, United quickly embarked on a difficult period, struggling desperately for form and ending the campaign failing to make a top-four finish – ending the season 6th and standing five points behind Tottenham , 4th.
Last season United performed significantly better, finishing the season that blossomed to finish third in the top flight.
