#Lake #Shore #Gold officials confirmed on #Friday evening that a person employed as a contractor died while working underground at the #Timmins #West mine this afternoon.

#Police and #Ministry of #Labor officials were called to the scene to investigate.

#Marcel #Cardinal, director of environment and sustainability at #Lake #Shore #Gold, confirmed #Friday evening that the individual was “deceased”.

#No further details were provided.

#When asked if the death was the result of an accident or if it was work related in some way, the #Cardinal replied: “I can’t speculate on this. #It is pending the investigation for the moment. #We don’t have more details so when we get them I’ll provide some updates. ”

The cardinal said they hoped to be able to release more information on #Saturday.

“#The police and the #Ministry of #Labor were there today so I’m not sure what that will tell us tomorrow.”

The company issued a statement in the early evening saying, “# #Around 3:30 p.m. on #January 1, 2021, #Lake #Shore #Gold, a subsidiary of #Pan #American #Silver, was informed that an incident occurred underground at the mine. #Timmins #West involving one of our subcontractors. . #We are currently collecting information about the incident and would like to express our sincere thoughts to the person and families involved.
