OTTAWA – Ontario is set to invoke new measures today in an attempt to control the growing COVID-19 pandemic.
The province plans to further reduce in-person collection limits, reduce the hours of operation of essential stores like grocery stores and pharmacies, and restrict construction and manufacturing to essential activities only.

Although the province reported the lowest number of new cases in more than a week, at 2,903, it is also reporting 41 new deaths and 138 new hospital admissions.

The province also has new modeling that warns that hospital intensive care units will be overwhelmed early next month if the current rate of infection continues.

There are nearly 400 people with COVID-19 in intensive care in Ontario, nearly double the number who needed intensive care in early December.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said the province has also detected eight more cases of the COVID-19 variant from the UK, bringing the total number detected across Canada to at least 22.
