The Trump Organization operates the Wollman Ice Rink near the southern edge of Central Park and the Lasker Ice Rink at the northern end of the park. Both contracts were due to expire in April.
Mr de Blasio’s office said it was informing the Trump organization that the city was beginning the process of canceling the agreements. The cancellation of the carousel, currently closed, would take effect in 25 days; the rinks would go into effect in 30 days, city officials said. The golf contract is more complex and could take several months to be canceled.
Mr de Blasio said on Wednesday that the city’s golf course deal with the Trump organization “should never have been done in the first place. “
Mr. de Blasio first offered to sever the city’s ties to the company in 2015, when Mr. Trump made comments disparaging Latinos. But some lawyers then argued that canceling contracts would not hold in court.
The agreements contain language that prohibits “arbitrary” or “capricious” reasons for setting aside if the decision appeared to be merely motivated by personal animosity towards the president.
Mark Levine, a Democratic Manhattan city councilor who has long supported severing ties with the Trump organization, celebrated the news.
“This is a welcome and long-awaited step (years!),” He written on twitter.
