The Manchester United squad had a fear of Covid – coach Michael Carrick forced to self-isolate.

The former USA and England star, now a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backstage squad, was forced to leave the club’s bio-bubble over Christmas.

Carrick is believed to be absent for victories at Old Trafford over Wolves and Aston Villa as he took precautions with a family member who allegedly contracted the virus.

Carrick, who would not have caught the virus himself, was back at the club for the midweek Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.

A United spokesperson confirmed: “Michael hasn’t been with us for a while, but he’s back now.”

So far, while Premier League rivals City, Aston Villa and Newcaslt have had to shut down their training grounds to contain the Covid outbreaks, United have had minimal disruption with their training HQ in a strictly controlled area.

Only a limited number of staff are allowed at the AON training complex and a deep cleaning is performed on a regular basis.

Currently, United are only dealing with one Covid case after Uruguayan teenager Facundo Pellistri, a U-23 player who joined this summer, tested positive.

Solskjaer says: “Personally, I feel safe in our bubble. We took all necessary steps to follow the protocols and guidelines, and the players followed their best.

“What’s going on outside in different clubs and in society is scary, and we have a responsibility and a duty to stay away and stay in the bubbles. ”
