She is the highest Republican to call for the president’s impeachment in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly riot on Capitol Hill, which Trump helped incite with lies and inflammatory rhetoric.
Representative John Katko, RN.Y., said earlier he would support impeachment after the president woke up a crowd that attacked the Capitol last week as Congress counted President-elect Joe Biden’s presidential victory. Representative Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., Later joined Cheney and Katko. The riot left five people dead, including a Capitol policeman.
In a statement, Cheney said Trump “called this crowd together, gathered the crowd and kindled this attack.”
“Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the president, ”said the president of the Republican conference. “The president could have intervened immediately and forcefully to end the violence. He did not do it. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution. ”

Once the House impeaches Trump, the Senate will decide whether to convict him. The chamber may not have time to vote to remove him from office before Biden takes office a week from Wednesday.
Even so, a Senate conviction would prevent Trump from becoming president again.
House Republicans have revealed their positions as The New York Times reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Told associates he believed Trump had done ungodly acts. The newspaper did not say whether McConnell would vote to convict the president if the House sends articles of impeachment to the Senate, or if he would urge Republicans to vote the same.
More Republicans could join Cheney, Katko and Kinzinger in supporting the effort. No House Republican voted to impeach Trump in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, breaks up with parliamentary minority leader Kevin McCarthy. The Californian Republican opposed Trump’s impeachment. He and Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., Both objected to counting Biden’s certified electoral victories in Arizona and Pennsylvania after the attack on Capitol Hill.
Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President and Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. He joined the other nine living Pentagon leaders earlier this month in warning of the military’s involvement in disputes over election results. The Washington Post op-ed came three days before the Capitol attack.
Trump said earlier that Democrats’ efforts to impeach him were dangerous and could spark more violence. Some of his Republican allies have argued that this effort will prevent attempts to reduce tensions in the country.
Supporters of impeachment have said Congress should not move forward until they hold Trump responsible for his supporters’ attempt to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.
The impeachment article that Democratic leaders appear to be supporting, titled “Incitement to Insurgency,” accuses Trump of committing serious crimes and misdemeanors by encouraging an attack on an equal branch of government. He says the president, by lying to his supporters about the election results for two months and then encouraging them to fight the result shortly before the Capitol invasion, helped spark the riot.
