It’s all a little confusing, and it’s just speculation, but Billboard is here to break down what fans think ‘Driver’s License’ and why. Buckle up and see below.

Who is involved?
Rodrigo, 17, starred alongside Joshua Bassett, 20, on Disney + High School Musical: The Musical: La série, and the two are rumored to be dating in real life.

What happened?

In August 2020, Bassett was seen having lunch with Sabrina Carpenter, 21, a singer who rose to fame for her role as Maya on the Disney Channel. Girl meets the world. Sabrina’s sister, Sarah, was also present.

On Halloween 2020, Bassett and Carpenter dressed up as Shark Boy and Lava Girl and did a TikTok about it, which proved they were at least friends and sparked couple rumors (although they didn’t. have never confirmed).

Lyrical references to the situation?

TikTok user Kaiya Olsen broke down the intricacies of ‘Driver’s License’ after its release, first referring to the lyrics, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s all I’m not sure about. ”

Sabrina is 21 (four years older than Rodrigo) and is blonde.

In an earlier version of the song, which Rodrigo posted on Instagram in July 2020, the lyrics refer to a “brunette” girl. Fans began to speculate if the change had to do with Bassett spending time with Carpenter.

Olsen then moved on to the opening words: “I got my driver’s license last week / As we’ve always talked about. ”

In a revamped social media video from LeBlanc Updates on YouTube, Rodrigo recalls practicing driving in Bassett’s car before getting his license and when the duo found out about the song they co-wrote , “Just for a moment”, would be High School Musical: The Musical: La série. “We celebrated and went to In-N-Out, and I couldn’t actually drive. I was 16, but I didn’t have my license, ”she says. “And so he took me in his car, and we drove around the In-N-Out parking lot, and that was my first time driving. ”

Finally, the chorus’s heart-wrenching line, “Guess you didn’t think what you wrote in that song about me,” had Internet sleuths looking for references to Rodrigo in Bassett’s previously released songs.

In July, Bassett released a sweet love song called “Anyone Else,” which has the lyrics, “How Am I Supposed to Think About Anything Else? / How should I continue to keep this to myself? / I’m done pretending to want someone else. Fans immediately thought of Rodrigo.

Again, nothing is confirmed about the 2021 love triangle, so we’ll have to wait and see if Rodrigo, Bassett or Carpenter say anything about the speculation.
