In collaboration with the World Bank and the UN, France is today organizing the One Planet Summit, which aims to accelerate the implementation of international climate agreements.
Bringing together a variety of state and government representatives, businessmen and representatives of NGOs and international organizations, the summit will focus on the themes of the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, the promotion of agroecology and the link between deforestation problems and the health of humans and animals species
The summit comes at a crucial time, especially as efforts to address climate and biodiversity issues have been overshadowed by the need to tackle the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, according to the UN Biodiversity Panel, the world is likely to experience more pandemics in the future if the necessary measures to preserve biodiversity are not taken quickly.
Despite the environmental emergency we all face today, expect businesses and governments to refrain from donating adequate resources to climate efforts as the fight against the pandemic-induced economic recession will remain probably their ultimate goal in the short term. Among the many projects proposed by the summit, expect those that simultaneously offer short-term benefits (like job creation) to receive more attention.
