United were beaten 2-0 by neighbors Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue on Wednesday evening.
Second-half goals from John Stones and Fernandinho helped City qualify for the fourth year in a row.
The Red Devils, on the other hand, suffered a fourth consecutive semi-final defeat as another chance to win a trophy fell.
For Fernandes, it was his third loss in four last draws since joining United 12 months ago. He was also part of the FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea and the Europa League loss to Sevilla last season.
Reacting to his team’s disappointing result on Instagram (via the metro) on Thursday evening, the portuguese star says they have to be better when it counts.
“I’m very sad and disappointed that I haven’t reached a final yet,” he admitted.
“We still have a lot to contend with, but we have to learn and understand that we can’t make the same mistakes again.
“We have to make an effort to improve ourselves and be able to fight for the trophies!”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer team will begin their journey in another cup competition this weekend. They face the Watford FA Cup championship outfit on Saturday.
They will also have the chance to climb to the top of the Premier League when they travel to Burnley next week.
Diallo delighted to complete the transfer
In other news, Amad Diallo says it’s a ‘dream come true’ to finally be a Manchester United player after completing his move to Old Trafford.
United reached a deal to sign him in October, but lacked the necessary papers to play.
But he has now received a work permit and has been able to join his new teammates. He put pen to paper on a deal until 2025, with the option for an additional year.
And despite the delay, Diallo insists he is physically and mentally ready to go. Read what he had to say in full here…
