Fulham’s game at Tottenham was postponed to December 30, followed by the Cottagers’ trip to Burnley, scheduled four days later.

The Premier League says 40 players and club staff have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past week – more than double the previous weekly high.

After previous tests once a week, the Premier League carried out 2,295 tests in two rounds over the past week.

Between December 28 and 31, 28 new positive tests and 12 more were found between January 1 and 3.

The previous high was 18 positive results from December 21-27.

“With a low number of positive tests in the overwhelming majority of clubs, the league continues to trust its Covid-19 protocols, fully backed by the government, to allow matches to go as planned,” the Premier said. League.

The latest results mark an increase in the rate of positive tests. In the last round, 1.74% of those tested tested positive.

The 18 positive tests recorded between December 21 and 27 come from 1,479 tests, ie a rate of 1.22%.

Under Premier League regulations, players and club staff who test positive must self-isolate for 10 days.

Three England top-flight matches were called off last week due to coronavirus outbreaks at individual clubs.

Manchester City’s trip to Everton on December 28 was called off after full-back Kyle Walker and forward Gabriel Jesus tested positive.

City’s game at Chelsea on Sunday went on despite four other members of Pep Guardiola’s squad – goalkeeper Ederson, defender Eric Garcia, striker Ferran Torres and midfielder Tommy Doyle – who delivered results positive.

Two away matches for Fulham have also been postponed – at Tottenham on December 30 and Burnley on January 3.

Fulham said the games were called off after a “significant number” of positive cases at the club.

Last Tuesday Sheffield United said they recorded “a number” of positive tests but chose to play Crystal Palace on Saturday with an exhausted squad.

The importance of compliance with protocols by players has been stressed to the 20 Premier League clubs.

It comes after there have been a number of apparent coronavirus violations by players at Christmas and New Year.
