“As for so many of us in these days of Covid, it’s so strange that the person who has always been there for us, with such zest for life, is gone,” he said.

Eve Branson, 11-year-old grandmother and 10-year-old great-grandmother, had lived a colorful and adventurous life.

Her son described how she took glider lessons in boy costume, performed on the West End stage, enlisted in the WRENSs during WWII and toured Germany as a ballet dancer after the war. .

In her later years, she founded the Eve Branson Foundation, a small non-profit organization based in Morocco that aims to provide young people with craft training.

After her death, the foundation said in a statement: “We are very sad to share the passing of our beloved founder, Eve Branson. Eve inspired and supported the communities of Atlas Mountain, until the end of her life. ”

Mr. Branson also described how his “inventive” and “fearless” mother started her career by giving her the money she made by selling a necklace.

“One day in the late 1960s, mom saw a necklace lying on the road near Shamley Green and took it to the police station,” he said.

“After three months, no one had asked for him, so the police told him she could keep him. She came to London, sold the necklace, and gave me the money.

“Without these £ 100, I would never have been able to create Virgin. ”

In an interview with The Guardian in 2014, Ms Branson said the family was “very, very poor when Richard was a child.”

“We had to try to make money in any way we could. It doesn’t hurt you to know what it’s like to struggle, ”she said.

His son went on to found the Virgin Group and last year he was estimated to have a net worth of £ 4.4bn (£ 3.3bn).

In 2011, Ms Branson made headlines when it was claimed that she was rescued from a fire on her son’s private Caribbean island by Hollywood actor Kate Winslet.
