#Canada added about 4,800 more cases of the new coronavirus on #Saturday as the resignation of an #Ontario minister sparked a series of revelations about elected officials and their vacations.

The country’s caseload now stands at 586,425 on #Saturday after several provinces started reporting new COVID-19 data after the holidays. A total of 3,922 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported by the provinces, while officials in #Alberta have estimated another 900 cases.

#Another 58 deaths have also been reported, bringing the country’s death toll to 15,714. #To date, 495,000 patients have recovered from the virus in #Canada, while more than 18.58 million tests have since been administered.

#Saturday’s data gives a limited snapshot of the total number of COVID-19 cases across the country, as several provinces like #British #Columbia, #Alberta, #Quebec and #Prince #Edward #Island and all of the territories no have not reported any new infections due to the holiday season or the weekend.

The new cases come as other politicians went on vacation after #Rod #Philips resigned from his #Ontario cabinet post on #Thursday.

#On #Thursday, the federal NDP stripped #Manitoban MP #Niki #Ashton of her critical role after learning she had recently traveled to #Greece to visit a sick relative.

#Saturday’s cases also broke records in #Ontario, after a one-day high of 3,363 new infections was reported. The province in total marked 5,839 cases during #January 1 and 2, bringing COVID-19 infections to 187,998.

#Saskatchewan 210 more cases in the past 24 hours, while #Manitoba has reported 326 new infections in the past two days.

#In #Atlantic #Canada, #New #Brunswick reported 10 more cases, while #Nova #Scotia received 13. #Newfoundland and #Labrador reported no new cases on #Saturday.

#Alberta, which did not release an official tally of new cases on #Saturday, was estimated by public health officials to have added 900 more cases of the virus.

#Cases of the new coronavirus have topped 84,511,153, according to #Johns #Hopkins #University. A total of 1,834,573 people have also died from the virus, with the #United #States, #India and #Brazil leading in cases and deaths.
