China has locked down Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei province, with millions of residents banned from leaving the big city.
The move will raise fears that China has not brought the virus under control, despite the low number of cases in recent weeks and months.

It comes after China blocked a team of WHO virologists from surrendering.

BNO News, based in the Netherlands, tweeted: “Shijiazhuang, the capital of China’s Hebei province, forbids people from leaving town due to coronavirus outbreak
“Gaocheng District in Hebei Province of China has been completely locked down due to a coronavirus outbreak. ”

Chinese state newspaper Global Times reported that all sales of train tickets from neighboring Hebei Province to the capital have been suspended, with the Shijiazhuang long-distance bus station closed.

Officials said Hebei, which is close to Hubei Province, which is home to Wuhan, was in “war mode” against the virus.

Authorities in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei, have launched mass testing campaigns and banned gatherings to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Chinese state television reported that the city has now banned passengers from entering its main station. The city previously required travelers to test negative for the COVID-19 nucleic acid test taken within 72 hours before boarding a train or plane in the province.

The total number of new COVID-19 cases for all of mainland China stood at 63, up from 32 reported a day earlier, marking the largest increase in daily cases since 127 cases were reported on July 30 .

The number of asymptomatic patients, who were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the disease but have not yet developed symptoms, also rose to 79 from 64 a day earlier.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China since the outbreak began in Wuhan city at the end of 2019 now stands at 87,278 cases, while the death toll has remained unchanged at 4,634.

In Dalian City, Liaoning Province, which has reported local infections in recent days, residents of medium and high risk areas have not been allowed to leave the city.

Residents of other areas have been urged to refrain from unnecessary trips outside Dalian.

Authorities in Guangdong province on Wednesday evening reported a patient infected with a more transmissible variant of the coronavirus discovered in South Africa.
