Bears at Saints: Play Notes

The Bears slipped into the playoffs as the NFC’s No.7 seed. Although they lost 35-16 to the Green Bay Packers in the regular season finale, they took last place in the conference playoffs when the Arizona Cardinals lost on the same day. This is the Bears’ second playoff appearance in the past three seasons, but only their third in the last 11 – their last playoff victory dates back to the end of the 2010 season. The Saints have won the NFC South after a 9-game winning streak mid-season and a sweep from quarterback Tom Brady and runner-up Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This is the Saints’ fourth consecutive playoff appearance. They were upset in a Wild Card home game by the Minnesota Vikings 26-20 in overtime last season. The year before, they had lost a controversial 26-23 OT game, also at home, to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game. Midseason offensive line adjustments by the Bears, who were 5-7 after Week 13, gave QB Mitchell Trubisky (2,055 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions) sufficient protection. He also opened holes for the current attack as an RB David Montgomery has rushed for 598 of his 1,070 rushing yards in the last six games. Saints QB Drew Brees threw 2,942 passing yards with 24 touchdowns against 6 interceptions in 12 games – he missed four games after suffering a puncture of the lung and broken ribs in Week 10. RB Alvin Kamara (932 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns) did not play last week due to COVID-19 protocols, but is expected to return on Sunday. New Orleans won 26-23 in overtime in Chicago in Week 8 as Brees threw for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. QB Nick Foles started for the Bears and finished with 272 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Prediction

Saints 30, bear 13

Silver line (?)

TO AVOID. The Saints will win, but the -550 price is not worth the risk.

Against the spread (?)

NEW ORLEANS -10 (-110) is the STRONGEST GAME – 1½ times your usual bet. Not only do the Saints have the fifth best offense with an average score of 30.1 points per game, their defense also ranks fifth in points allowed (21.1 PPG).

Breaking it down further, the defense gives up just 93.9 rushing yards per game to place fourth and 217.0 passing YPG to fifth. Chicago, which even has the chance to be in the playoffs, will struggle on both ends of the ball.

More under (?)

the LESS THAN 47.5 (-115) is the way forward. The Bears will struggle to find the end zone against the Saints’ defense.

Keep an eye on the injury report. If LB Smith and CB Johnson are unavailable for Chicago, this game turns into a half-unit bet, as the New Orleans offense could rack up 35 points or more.
