The lawmaker son of Brazilian far-right President Jair Bolsonaro changed his Twitter profile picture to that of Donald Trump to protest the platform’s decision to ban the US president.
Accusing Twitter of “authoritarianism,” Eduardo Bolsonaro said on Sunday that he was “constantly” using Trump’s image.
Twitter launched Trump on Friday, two days after a violent mob of the president’s supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington as lawmakers were counting and validating President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory in November.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he lost due to election fraud, although he and his campaign team did not provide any evidence to support their allegations and lost some 60 state and federal lawsuits involving to annul the result of the vote.
Biden, who will be sworn in as president on Jan.20, won more than seven million more votes than Trump and over 70 more votes in constituencies.
Eduardo Bolsonaro denounced the “free speech murder” and wondered why Trump was suspended from Twitter but not the authoritarian leader of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro.
When his father was sworn in as president of Brazil in January 2019, it was suggested that Eduardo could be appointed ambassador to Washington due to his close relationship with the Trump family.
Jair Bolsonaro was the last top world leader to congratulate Biden on his victory more than a month after the election.
Both considered populists, Bolsonaro and Trump have been close allies since the Brazilian president came to power.
“Basically what was the problem, what caused the crisis? A lack of confidence in the vote, ”Jair Bolsonaro said of the violence on Capitol Hill last week.
He backed Trump’s claims that he was a victim of voter fraud and also suggested that “something worse” could happen in Brazil next year when he is re-elected if voters are allowed to vote electronically. .
