Billionaire casino mogul and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson has died, according to a statement released Tuesday by Las Vegas Sands.

“Our founder and visionary leader, Sheldon G. Adelson, passed away last night at the age of 87 of complications from treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma,” the statement read.

A supporter of outgoing US President Donald Trump as well as Israeli Prime Minister Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Adelson has become one of the richest men on the planet thanks to his extensive chain of casinos.

Forbes estimated his net worth at $ 35 billion on Tuesday, a fortune he often used to weigh on US politics.

He has fiercely opposed former Democratic President Barack Obama and has been a major donor to his successor Trump, donating nearly $ 220 million to the President and his fellow Republican Congressmen during the 2020 election cycle.

Former President George W. Bush, a Republican, in a statement called Adelson an “American patriot, generous benefactor of charitable causes and staunch supporter of Israel.”

“Sheldon worked his way out of a tough Boston neighborhood to build a successful business that loyally employed tens of thousands of people – and entertained millions,” Bush said.
