The PGA of America has voted to remove its 2022 Championship from Donald Trump’s course in Bedminster, New Jersey after the MAGA siege on the Capitol on Wednesday.

The Trump Organization, which owns or operates 17 golf courses around the world, criticized the decision, calling it “breach of a binding contract.”

The organization added that it was “incredibly disappointed” and complained that it “invested a lot, several million dollars in the PGA 2022 Championship” and that the PGA had “no right to terminate the agreement” .

PGA President Jim Richerson explained that the board voted to sever ties with the Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey, after the president was charged with inciting a deadly riot and at the Capitol headquarters as Congress certified President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory. .

“We find ourselves in a political situation that is beyond our control,” said Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America. “We are trustees for our members, for the game, for our mission and for our brand. And how can we better protect that? We felt, given the tragic events of Wednesday, that we could no longer hold it in Bedminster. The damage could have been irreparable. The only real course of action was to leave.

This is the second time in just over five years that the PGA of America has pulled one of its events out of a Trump course.

Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch said the PGA had debated removing its major tournament from the Trump National for two years because “any affiliation (with the president) is toxic.

The move will be a blow to Trump, an avid golfer who has made at least 300 golf club visits during his tenure.

It appears that the 2022 PGA Championship was the only PGA tournament listed on the Trump Organization website. Today’s PGA vote appears to end the ties between Trump’s golf courses and professional golf.

The PGA of America, which operates separately from the PGA Tour and its week-to-week tournaments, previously hosted the PGA Senior Championship at Trump’s course outside of Washington in 2017. It was the same year as the USGA hosted the US Women’s Open at Trump National in Bedminster.

Trump also owns Turnberry in Scotland, one of the most picturesque ties in the British Open rotation most famous for the ‘Duel in Sun’ between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977, and most recently Henrik Stenson defeating Phil Mickelson in 2016. The R&A, which determines the rotation of the British Open, has not returned to Turnberry since Trump took over.

He also owns Trump Doral outside of Miami, for years a venerable stop on the PGA Tour calendar and most recently a world championship golf venue. Trump’s presence made it difficult to find a corporate sponsor, and the tournament moved to Mexico in 2017.

Waugh said the PGA of America already has a team in place in New Jersey to start selling the events to the public and local sponsorship. Now it is a matter of finding a place to play the PGA Championship, which dates back to 1916, for next year.

Foreign leaders, national leaders and diplomats also condemn the president, who has since been barred from using most social media sites indefinitely.

“Failure to publicly hold the president accountable for his actions would further harm our democracy and our ability to effectively achieve our foreign policy goals abroad,” reads a cable from diplomats at the State Department, according to Associated Press.

Other riot-related cancellations include Simon & Schuster canceling Senator Josh Hawley’s planned book and Apple and Amazon removing the right-wing social media app Talk from their platforms.

One of the remaining fallout that may be on the way is Trump’s impeachment.

It doesn’t seem likely that the 25th Amendment will be invoked, but House Democrats are aiming for an impeachment vote this week.

Biden’s inauguration is slated for Jan.20.
