Three Peterborough Walmart store workers tested positive for COVID-19

Three employees from two Walmart stores in Peterborough contracted the COVID-19 virus while in stores.

Three employees at Walmart stores at 1002 Chemong St. and 950 Lansdowne St. W. have tested positive for the virus, according to Felicia Fefer, general affairs manager for Walmart Canada.

They tested positive on December 5 and 7. They were then asked to self-isolate, as having colleagues who had close contact with the three.

“As a precaution, associates identified as being in close and prolonged contact have been asked to self-isolate,” Fefer said.

Peterborough Public Health has been notified of the cases at both locations, she said.

Walmart is taking all necessary precautions to keep business as usual for employees and customers, she said.

“Safety remains a top priority at Walmart,” Fefer said via email. “Rest assured, we will continue to take action to support the well-being of our customers and associates.”

Increased cleaning has been implemented in all stores to help protect people and prevent further cases, she said.

Employees will be screened before starting a regular shift, she said.

“(There are) wellness checks that include a temperature check for all associates at the start of each shift,” Fefer said.

“If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, we take a number of steps, including notifying local public health authorities,” Fefer said. “We respond transparently to inquiries received regarding the number of confirmed cases in stores, distribution centers or offices from customers or the media.”

She added that their thoughts and wishes are with their employees and those of their families.
