The 36 locations in the northeast where coronavirus infection rates are now in the green

The number of new weekly coronavirus cases recorded in the Northeast continued to decline as the county emerged from the second nationwide lockdown.
The region was placed in the strictest Tier 3 category earlier this week, despite declining infection rates in the past two weeks.

But the local picture of the surge in coronavirus cases adds to indications that the Northeast has passed the peak of the latest wave of infections.

More and more regions in the Northeast have seen Covid-19 rates drop below 100 per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to data from Public Health England, there are only three areas with infection rates above 400 – marked in purple on the map – Newton Hall & Brasside, Percy Main and Ashington East.

The latest figures for the seven days through November 29 show turnover rates for each local area to give a clearer picture of infection levels.

Seven-day rates are per 100,000 population.

Regions are believed to have sustained infection rates below 250 before they are considered for a move to Level 2, with the next review scheduled for December 16.

As it stands, all of the North East authority areas are below that number, but Gateshead is the only place with an infection rate below the national average, which currently stands at 153. 5.

A level 2 crossing could allow pubs and restaurants to reopen across the region in time for Christmas.
