Even Smokey Robinson learns something new every day.

The 80-year-old Motown legend was recently tasked with sending a vacation message to a former neighbor and mispronounced the word ‘Hanukkah’.

“Hanukkah” is a more traditional spelling of the festival of Hanukkah. The two words are pronounced the same.

The “Tracks of My Tears” singer was instructed via the video-sharing site Cameo by an individual named Jeff and his brother to send a Hanukkah message to their mother, Margo, who grew up opposite Robinson.

“Hey Margo, how are you? Surprise, surprise, ”says Robinson. “It’s Smokey Robinson. I know you didn’t expect to hear from me, but I was contacted by your sons… they told me you lived in Detroit across from me, and that’s beautiful. ”

Robinson said Margo now lives in Vancouver.

He continued: ” [Your sons] wanted me to wish you ‘Happy Hanukkah.’ ”

Rather than pronouncing the word correctly, the singer mistakenly said “chuh-noo-kuh”.

The error continued to roll, however, as Robinson continued, mispronouncing the word each time.

“I have no idea what Hanukkah is but Happy Hanukkah because they said so,” he said in the clip. “Anyway, God bless you, baby, and enjoy Chanukah.” Have a wonderful time. ”

Although the tweet quickly went viral, Jeff seemed unfazed.

“By the way, @smokeyrobinson can pronounce it however they want. He is a true legend whose music has accompanied me since my birth ”, he commented on his original post. “Her kindness and generosity of spirit have already made this most unusual Chanukah 2020 one of the most memorable in my family. In addition, my mother says hello to me.

Soon after, Robinson realized his mistake and commented on the video.

“In the spirit of 2020, I’m going to need an overhaul! ” he wrote. “Please DM me on your mom’s phone number so we can try again.”

The singer followed another video Jeff shared with his mom chatting with the legend over the phone.
