Shane Richie returns to West End role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Shane Richie will return to the West End in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie following his stint on the 2020 I’m A Celebrity series.

The former EastEnders actor, 56, will reprise his role as Hugo and drag queen Loco Chanelle’s alter ego on January 5, 2021.

It comes amid claims that Shane was “inundated with amazing job offers” after impressing on I’m A Celebrity, he was knocked out on Thursday’s episode.

Speaking of reprise his role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie he played the character in 2019 and toured the UK earlier this year, Shane said he was excited.

He revealed: “I can’t wait to swap my castle walking shoes for a pair of high heels and return to Everybody’s Talking About Jamie as Hugo / Loco Chanelle in January.

“After 2020 we could all do with a little bit of glitter in the gray and having been with Jamie both in the West End and on tour in the UK this will be a fabulous way to start the New Year. ”

While producer Nica Burns added: ‘We’re thrilled that Shane Richie is returning to sprinkle his special stardust on the role of Hugo / Loco Chanelle. What a treat!’

The musical, which returns to the Apollo Theater with social distancing on December 12, follows Jamie New, who is 16 and doesn’t quite fit in, with the teenager set to become a drag queen instead of chasing a “Real” career.

Unsure about his future, Jamie knows one thing for sure – that he’s going to cause a stir.

Supported by his loving mom and amazing friends, Jamie overcomes prejudices, beats bullies and comes out of the dark, into the spotlight.

The musical was originally staged at the Crucible in Sheffield in 2017 before moving to London’s West End later in the year with the return of most of the original cast.

Nominated for five Laurence Olivier Awards in 2018, the production won Best New Musical at the WhatsOnStage Awards that year.

In October, a trailer for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the musical was released with Richard E. Grant playing the character of Shane Hugo / Loco Chanelle.

The film also stars Catastrophe co-creator and star Sharon Horgan as Miss Hedge, Jamie’s teacher, while Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire will appear as her mother, Margaret.

The news comes after it was reported that Shane has been inundated with “extraordinary” job offers since the ITV show started.

Shane admitted that he was “literally skinny” before he went to Gwrych Castle camp and had to borrow money from friends and family.

Sources told the Mirror that the attention Shane garnered from TV bookers was “extraordinary”.

An insider on the show said, “Before he went to Shane, said he would love to return to EastEnders in 2021, but there are more deals on the table now over the next 12 months.

“Shane is going to be a busy man. He won’t be thin when he’s finished seizing some of the opportunities available to him now. Nothing prevents it from making a big comeback in 2021. “
