A former economic development assistant to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and current Manhattan borough presidential candidate on Sunday accused the Democratic governor of sexually harassing her while working for the state.
Lindsey Boylan, 36 ans, said in messages on Twitter that Mr. Cuomo “has been harassing me for years. Many have seen and watched it. I could never predict what to expect: would I be toast on my work (which was very good) or hassled by my appearance. Or would it be both in the same conversation?
Caitlin Girouard, spokesperson for the governor, denied the allegations.
“There is simply no truth in these claims,” she said.
A state official said Ms Boylan did not file any formal complaints against the governor when she was a state employee.
Ms. Boylan worked for the state’s economic development authority, Empire State Development, from 2015 to 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile. She then moved into the executive chamber – Mr. Cuomo’s dedicated staff – and served from March 2018 through October 2018.
Mr Cuomo’s national profile has increased based on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City. He is being considered for an appointment as United States attorney general by President-elect Joe Biden, people familiar with the matter said.
Amid the #MeToo movement, Mr. Cuomo signed a law in 2018 that, among other things, extended state protections against workplace harassment to contractors, outlawed compulsory arbitration for victims of harassment, and required private employers to they develop anti-harassment policies and provide annual training. .
In a Democratic primary challenge, actress Cynthia Nixon accused Mr Cuomo that year of delaying responding to complaints of sexual harassment against allies. Ms. Nixon nominated Sam Hoyt, a former state assembly member Mr. Cuomo hired as an economic development advisor.
A former government employee, Lisa Marie Cater, said in a 2017 lawsuit that she was kissed and forcibly tampered with by Mr Hoyt, who helped her find a job in the Department of Motor Vehicles. Ms Cater said in the lawsuit that Mr Cuomo and his advisers ignored her complaints.
An attorney for the governor said Ms Cater’s complaints about Mr Hoyt had been fully investigated. His legal actions against MM. Cuomo and Hoyt were dismissed in 2019. It was not clear whether Mr. Hoyt had left state government as a result of the investigation. Mr Hoyt and his lawyer have previously said that Mr Hoyt and Ms Cater have a consensual romantic relationship.
Mr. Cuomo’s campaign responded to Ms. Nixon at the time by highlighting her legislative record.
After quitting her job in the state, Ms Boylan issued an unsuccessful Democratic primary challenge to U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler over her initial reluctance to impeach President Trump. She declared her candidacy for the presidency of the borough in November.
