At least seven people were injured when a motorist walked into a group of about 50 Black Lives Matter protesters demonstrating in New York City on Friday afternoon.

Several ambulances and emergency vehicles were seen at East 39th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan on Friday just after 4 p.m. The extent of the injuries is unclear.

Between 40 and 50 protesters were protesting nearby, according to WABC-TV.

Police said the driver remained at the scene after colliding with protesters and was questioned by police.

The incident took place shortly after 4 p.m. when several of the protesters reportedly surrounded a car.

Moments later, the driver of the car entered the group, injuring at least seven people.

Several of these injured were taken to hospital. Their injuries are not considered serious, but no further details about their conditions are known.

“At that time, everyone affected appeared to have sustained non-fatal injuries,” an NYPD spokesperson told The Daily Beast.

Video posted on social networks by @ _antwan1_ shows police arresting a woman who is believed to be the driver of the car. The woman in the footage is young and white and is taken away by police as protesters appear to be yelling at her.

It is not yet clear whether the collision was accidental or intentional and – if deliberate – what could be the motive.

Dozens of NYPD officers were at the scene with several surrounding a black car on the street believed to be the vehicle involved in the incident.

According to CBS Local, a protest was taking place in the area for people on hunger strike at an ICE facility in Bergen County, New Jersey, at the time of the collision.
