Michigan Wolverines cancel football game against Maryland, suspend operations

Michigan canceled its game against Maryland this weekend, it was announced on Wednesday, after the Wolverines made all football activities virtual earlier this week due to an increase in COVID cases. 19 within the program.
The decision to cancel the game as well as suspend the practices was made in consultation with medical professionals, who will ultimately determine when the practices will resume.

The first Michigan will be able to return to the training ground is Monday.

“The decision of our medical professionals to stop training and cancel Saturday’s game against Maryland was made with the health, safety and well-being of student-athletes, coaches and staff alike. our top priority, ”said Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel. Release. “We have seen an increase in the number of student-athletes unavailable to compete due to positive tests and associated contact tracing due to our most recent antigen and PCR test results. ”

The game against Maryland was Michigan’s last scheduled home game. With losses in all three home games this season, this is the first time in program history that Michigan has failed to secure at least one home victory.

The Wolverines are 2-4 this season and still have Ohio State on the schedule at Columbus. With this game canceled, there is no guarantee that Michigan and the State of Ohio will play in the annual rivalry game.

If the game is also canceled next weekend, the state of Ohio would be subject to the six-game minimum required by the Big Ten to participate in the conference championship game. The exception is if the average number of games played by each team during the conference drops below six, in which case the Buckeyes would qualify.

Any changes to politics or divisional tiebreakers should be generated by the 14 athletic directors, who should ultimately agree on the changes.

Maryland are still training this week and are now preparing for their game against Rutgers on December 12.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg contributed to this report.
