Matt Cardle recalls ‘weird’ flirtation with Meghan Markle before meeting Prince Harry

Matt Cardle claims he came very close to dating Meghan Markle just before meeting Prince Harry.

The When We Collide frontman, 37, won the X Factor exactly 10 years ago today.

To mark the anniversary, Matt revealed that he and the Duchess of Sussex got closer before their lives went in totally different directions.

The pair exchanged messages in 2015 after Meghan followed Matt on Twitter as he starred on the West End Memphis show.

They almost had dinner – but she soon had a royal date.

Speaking to The Sun Sunday, Matt – now with his girlfriend Amber Hernaman – said, “It was just a very strange, very strange situation. I really don’t know how it happened.

“Life has a course and I wasn’t on that one. I laughed at it, but it’s amazing to think about it again. ”

Matt then revealed that he was set to quit the X Factor a few weeks before earning it.

He fell very ill during the series 10 years ago and jerked off almost everything before being convinced to fight in full health.

Matt is glad he did – he made history but became the most voted winner for the ITV talent competition ever.

But it took a few painful injections to see it through.

He told the publication: “It was pretty claustrophobic. We only ate cold chicken nuggets most nights and were rounded up by security.

“We were all sick and we got colds. I’d had the flu, tonsillitis, bronchitis, laryngitis, – everything. I was in absolute mess. I don’t know how I got out of it.

“The people at X Factor were like, ‘Look, you can’t do the Saturday show but that means you’re out. I had steroid injections in my butt to get up and move.

“I was very, very close to putting everything in place. ”
