Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal snatched a strip from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and suggested the Norwegian only stay in his post simply because he’s a former player.

Van Gaal this week offered a candid assessment of his former club and delivered a not-so-glowing verdict on current boss Solskjaer.

The Dutchman believes Solskjaer has the added protection of being a club legend and simply won’t be knocked out by United in the middle of a season … although he could finally wake up abruptly at the end of the current campaign.

“Solskjaer is a former player so they won’t fire him as quickly as someone else,” the Norwegian’s Van Gaal said, as reported by the Mirror.

“United will not be sacking a coach during the season, especially Solskjaer. I see all the stories about Solskjaer and his future in the media.

“But they waited by sacking me until the end of the season and it could happen to him,” he added.

Van Gaal received his marching orders from United in the summer of 2016, although he had won the FA Cup for the club against Crystal Palace hours before.

After replacing the doomed David Moyes, Van Gaal believed he was finally putting things on the right track at Old Trafford before the ax fell.

Now, drawing on his own experience, Van Gaal believes Solskjaer could follow the same path.

He added: “They waited to fire me until the end of the season and it could happen to him,” before continuing to criticize United’s approach in the recent derby draw in the scoreless stalemate with his local rivals Manchester City and boldly claiming to behave like “servants”.

“All Man United have done is defend themselves with ten men,” Van Gaal said. “Everyone knows about my relationship with Pep Guardiola, who is angry with me because I challenged him in my last book.

“But I liked watching City more than United. I have a lot more sympathy for City than for United.

Honestly, United were just defending and hoping they could get a quick shot on the counter.

“United have just defended and put a few players in front who can run 100 meters in 9 seconds. Is this a world record?

“In the derby, United played like they were City minions.
