But he warned Solskjaer that the ax could fall on him next summer – as it did for him moments after winning the 2016 FA Cup final.
Van Gaal’s sacking after ten-year-old United beat Crystal Palace in overtime at Wembley four years ago is still on par with the 69-year-old Dutchman.
And he believes Solskjaer would have been screwed up at Old Trafford by now if he hadn’t been a successful former United star with a big history for the club.
“Solskjaer is a former player so they won’t fire him as quickly as someone else,” said van Gaal who was unimpressed with United’s football game under the Norwegian.
“United will not be sacking a coach during the season, especially Solskjaer. I see all the stories about Solskjaer and his future in the media.
“But they waited by sacking me until the end of the season and it could happen to him. ”
Van Gaal has managed Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and coached the Netherlands twice before succeeding David Moyes at United in 2014.
He lasted for two years before being replaced by Jose Mourinho with some United fans dismayed at his methodical style and rigid playing pattern.
Despite these criticisms, the seasoned Dutchman penetrated Solskjaer’s football brand – and criticized the Norwegian’s confusing tactical switches.
“The football he brings is that of a counter-attacking team. He always adapts to his opponents, ”explains Van Gaal.
“And he’s playing different systems all the time. Against Southampton it’s 4-4-2, in the next game there are 5 defenders, then it’s 4-2-3-1.
“You could say he uses the qualities of his players, but at West Ham United they were outclassed in the first half.
“It was only when Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes arrived that they made the difference.
“Using different systems is okay, but my question would be does he train players properly to use those systems?
“Because it’s essential that if you change these different playing systems, it has to be done the right way.
“It depends less on the quality of the players than on the actual practice of a system in training. ”
Van Gaal admits he was disappointed with Solskjaer’s cautious approach in the Manchester derby 0-0 draw, claiming United were City’s ‘minions’.
“All Man United have done is defend themselves with ten men. Everyone knows about my relationship with Pep Guardiola, who is mad at me because I challenged him in my last book.
“But I liked watching City more than United. I have a lot more sympathy for City than for United.
“Honestly, United were just defending and hoping they could get a quick shot on the clock. Pep’s team has no intention of defending with ten men.
“United have just defended and put a few players in front who can run 100 meters in 9 seconds. Is this a world record?
“All I’m saying is Greenwood or Rashford or Martial are super fast runners who will use the space United opponents leave behind when United sit down and defend.
“In the derby, United played like they were City minions. ”
